Delhi: Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh was all praises for HRD Minister Smriti Irani for leading government's charge in the Lok Sabha over JNU row and suicide of Dalit student Rohith Vemula.

"Powerful speech given by Smriti Irani in Lok Sabha today. Her speech was an eye-opener not only for the House but also for the country," Singh said.

He also said, "No harassment of innocent students will be done by the Police. JNU is one of the most reputed institutions of India."

"Those who were involved in violence in Patiala House Court premise will not be spared. Action will be taken against them," Rajnath added.

At the same time, the Home Minister answered criticism for making a remark that LeT founder Hafiz Sayeed had expressed support to JNU students, telling the Lok Sabha that he never makes any comment which is "baseless or not backed by any direct or indirect evidence".

He, however, refrained from going into details citing confidentiality.

Replying to a day-long debate on the JNU issue, he said the government had not hand in the action taken against the students.

He said police is taking action with regard to allegations that anti-India slogans were chanted there.

"If slapping of sedition charge was right, the court will uphold it, if it was wrong, the court will quash it. But let the court take a view on it," he said.
