Samajwadi Party, SGPC send relief materials to quake-ravaged Nepal

The ruling Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh and the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) have sent relief materials, including food packets, water bottles and first-aid, to quake-ravaged Nepal.

Lucknow/Amritsar: The ruling Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh and the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) have sent relief materials, including food packets, water bottles and first-aid, to quake-ravaged Nepal.

"Today, 21 trucks carrying relief material such as mineral water and food have left for Nepal from Uttar Pradesh. The material will be distributed among quake victims. One truck will be carrying first-aid. One team of doctors will also be reaching there by evening," said Samajwadi Party member Rajendra Chaudhary in Lucknow.

In Punjab`s Amritsar city, the people were seen preparing food in community kitchen at the Golden Temple to be sent to Nepal.

"We were asked to prepare packets of food material, including water bottle for the people struck in Nepal. But the Deputy Commissioner told us that the air service in Nepal is disrupted, however he asked us to keep ourselves prepared," said Manjeet Singh, a member of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC).

The death toll from the devastating earthquake, which hit Nepal and northern parts of India on Saturday, climbed over 2,100 even as the rescue efforts intensified in search of survivors in the Himalayan nation`s worst temblor in over 80 years.

Earlier in the day, a powerful 6.7-magnitude aftershock jolted Nepal and adjoining areas, triggering panic among the people.

The massive earthquake and the aftershocks left behind a trail of death and destruction in Nepal`s capital Kathmandu.
