SC conference on Good Friday unfortunate: Congress MP

The Supreme Court should not have organised a judicial conference on Good Friday, which is a solemn occasion for Christians, Congress Rajya Sabha MP from Goa Shantaram Naik said on Thursday.

Panaji: The Supreme Court should not have organised a judicial conference on Good Friday, which is a solemn occasion for Christians, Congress Rajya Sabha MP from Goa Shantaram Naik said on Thursday.

Naik also asked if the apex court would have attempted to organise such an event on Diwali. The state's lone Rajya Sabha MP was speaking to reporters at the Congress state headquarters in Panaji.

"It is unfortunate that a three-day judicial conference has been scheduled by the Supreme Court beginning on Good Friday, which is a spiritual day for Christians. Will the court organise a similar conference beginning on Diwali?" Naik asked.

The conference, an annual meeting of all chief justices of high courts and the apex court, is scheduled to be inaugurated by Chief Justice HL Dattu on Friday.

"The highest court of the land should be sensitive to minorities living in the country," Naik said, condemning the state government's decision to inaugurate the Goa Film Festival, a three-day event on Good Friday.
