Mumbai: Facing the heat over botching-up the Sheena Bora murder case, the Raigad Police on Saturday ordered a fresh inquiry into why a case was not registered in 2012 even after the remains of Sheena Bora's body was found.
Addressing a press conference, Raigad SP Suvez Haque said, “On 23 may 2012, police got information that a body was recovered in Pen-Khopoli Road. But no case was filed then even as the body was recovered.
“We have ordered to know why no case was registered; Mumbai cops will ask for all original documents related to case,” he added amid rising queries of an alleged 'cover-up' in the case.
Further question the then Raigadh Polices' intentions, Haque said, “In 2012, Police conducted post mortem of the body on the spot only and the samples were send to JJ hospital. Later, neither JJ hospital sent report nor police seek any report.”
“We have ordered an inquiry into why no case was registered,” Raigad SP said.
He further said, “Raigad Police is trying to exhume the remains. IG Konkan Range has asked to conduct an inquiry into why no crime or AD case was registered by Raigad police in 2012, on which we have submitted a detailed report.”
Earlier, in a major breakthrough Raigarh police had recovered a suitcase in which allegedly Sheena's body was carried before it was disposed off in the jungle.
The sensational Sheena Bora murder case probe took a fresh turn on Friday night when the police claimed that Sanjeev Khanna, the second husband of Indrani Mukerjea, confessed to his complicity in the crime during a joint interrogation of three accused.
Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria, who is directing the investigation, said earlier informed that Sheena was killed on April 24, 2012 and her body was found by Raigad police on May 23, 2012.
The driver SP Rai led the police to the murder site in Raigad, near Mumbai, a few months ago, from where police recovered Sheena's remains three years ago.
Sheena's mother, Indrani Mukherjee is believed to have killed her, allegedly by strangulating, with help from driver Rai and ex-husband Sanjeev Khanna on April 24, 2012.
During interrogation, Rai had said that he had helped Indrani in disposing of the body by dumping it in the forests of Raigad district.
