Subramanian Swamy actually targeting Arun Jaitley, RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan just an excuse: Congress

New Delhi: A day after Bharatiya Janata Party leader Subramanian Swamy urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to sack RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan, Congress on Wednesday said, the newly-appointed Rajya Sabha MP is actually targeting Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and not Rajan.

The Congress said, “Swamy is actually targeting Arun Jaitley and RBI Governor is just an excuse.”

The grand old party's comments come after Swamy advocated for sacking of Rajan and claimed the RBI Governor was "mentally not fully Indian" and alleged that he has "wilfully" wrecked the economy.

In a two-page letter to Modi on Monday, Swami said, “The reason why I recommend this is that I am shocked by the wilful and apparently deliberate attempt by Rajan to wreck the Indian economy.”

Non-Productive Assets of public sector banks have doubled to Rs.3.5 lakh crore in two years, Swamy said.

"These actions of Rajan lead me to believe that he is acting more as a disrupter of the Indian economy than the person who wants the Indian economy to improve," the BJP's newly nominated Rajya Sabha member said.

Earlier, Swamy had targeted Jaitley on black money and inflation, saying the mechanism adopted for repatriating the illegal wealth stashed abroad will not serve the intended purpose.

"I have suggested in a letter to the government (about) six steps to bring back the black money stashed abroad. But the way adopted by Finance Minister will not bring back black money," he had said.

Last week Swamy had said that Rajan should be sent back to Chicago.

Rajan was appointed RBI Governor by the previous UPA government in September 2013 for a three-year term, which can be extended.
