New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Subramanian Swamy on Wednesday said the latest revelations by the Delhi Police in the death case of Sunanda Pushkar Tharoor, the wife of Congress leader and former union minister Shashi Tharoor, indicate that there was a conspiracy to kill her.
"In my opinion, the whole circumstance is such that there has been a conspiracy to kill her. Who are the members of this conspiracy and where was the quid pro quo and what was the reason for the murder? These are some of the things that now have gone into," he said.
Pointing out that the AIIMS preliminary report, as early as April, had held that it was an unnatural death, Swamy said: "In September, thereafter, the autopsy was completed. They said yes it is a murder because she has body wounds which can't be explained and she has injection puncture on her hand as well as the conciliation on her cheek, mouth has been forced open and there was poison inside her system."
"So, from September it was clear, but since the FIR was not registered I decided to go on it. But the Home Minister told me that he has asked for a report and he will take a personal call on it, also it will not be any more the decision of the Delhi Police alone," he added.
The BJP leader further said the Delhi Police then sent its report and recommendation, which was accepted.
"The FIR has been registered. Now, the police is empowered to do the necessary investigation to find out who is behind it," he added.
Earlier in the day, Delhi's Police Commissioner BS Bassi said that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to carry forward the probe in the case.
"In order to do a proper investigation in this case, we have made a special team. This special investigation team will be closely monitored by Additional DCP (South). One inspector and a SHO of Sarojini Nagar are also a part of this SIT. All these people will collectively take forward the investigation," said Bassi.
"I assure that I will share with you all the necessary information required. There is no need to worry about that. The moment any relevant thing will come before us, you will be informed about that," he added.
Bassi also said that the police is as of now is proceeding according to the action plan, and added that every aspect is being examined carefully.
Sunanda, who married Tharoor in 2010, had checked into The Leela Hotel in Chanakyapuri a day before her death on January 17, 2014.
Tharoor's aides said the couple had checked into the luxury hotel because of renovation work at his Delhi bungalow.
Prior to her death, Sunanda was embroiled in a spat with Pakistan-based journalist, Mehr Tarar, whom she accused of stalking her husband Shashi Tharoor.
