Vyapam scam: CBI registers 5 more FIRs, files PE in Akshay Singh's death case​

Bhopal: Widening its probe, the CBI on Friday registered five more cases in the Vyapam scam including one of murder in the mysterious death of MBBS student Namrata Damor in 2012, taking to 10 the number of FIRs lodged by it and also filed a Preliminary Enquiry in the sudden demise of investigative journalist Akshay Singh.

CBI Director Anil Sinha said the agency has registered five more cases and that it will submit a report to the Supreme Court on the status of its probe.

"We will investigate the cases within the manner that has been given to CBI by the Supreme Court. Our job is to investigate and submit our reports to the court and that we will do to the satisfaction of the court," he told reporters.

Congress has alleged that at least 49 people associated with the scandal have so far died under "mysterious" circumstances.

The CBI registered a PE to probe the mysterious death of TV Today reporter Akshay Singh while investigating Vyapam-related developments in Madhya Pradesh.

MP Police had carried out inquest proceedings in Singh's case where he suddenly fell ill and died after interviewing father of Namrata Damor (one of the witnesses of Vyapam who died in 2012). "The inquest proceedings have been taken over by CBI by registering a Preliminary Enquiry," the CBI said.

Today, CBI registered a case under section 302 (murder) to probe the death of Damor, who allegedly took illegal route to gain admission in Gwalior medical college.

While the MP police had maintained that 19-year-old Damor, who was found dead on January seven, 2012, was suffering from depression and had committed suicide, two sets of doctors gave different opinions about her death raising suspicions.

The girl is believed to have been a witness to happenings in the case.

The second case relates to alleged illegalities in the Pre-Medical Test of 2010 in which only one person has been named as an accused.

The third case pertains to alleged irregularities during an examination conducted by Vyapam in 2010 in which the state police had named four accused. Seven more accused were included by the Special Task Force(STF) in this case.

The fourth FIR was filed in connection with the police recruitment of 2013 while the fifth was against 22 accused who allegedly impersonated candidates during PMT of 2009.

The CBI team, which has been camping in Bhopal for the last five days, had registered five cases two days back in connection with the scam against many people including a member of MP Backward Classess and Minorities Commission member and his son.

The Supreme Court had handed over the investigation in the scam involving the Madhya Pradesh Professional Examination Board (MPPEB), also known by its Hindi acronym Vyapam, to the CBI last week.

Political parties, especially the Congress, are geared up to corner the Government on the multi-crore scam that also involved irregularities in job recruitments in the Monsoon session of Parliament beginning Tuesday.
