Yakub Memon executed on his birthday

New Delhi: Yakub Abdul Razzak Memon, convicted in the March 12, 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts, was hanged till death at the Nagpur Central Jail on Thursday morning, officials said.

In what is apparently an irony of fate, he was hanged on July 30, also happens to be his birthday.

He was sent to the gallows -- on his 54th birthday today -- after several of his court appeals and clemency petitions were rejected by various courts.

Memon, a chartered accountant by profession, who was handed death sentence in 2007 had reacted to the verdict by quoting Jesus Christ and said, "Forgive them Lord for they don't know what they do."
