Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Police on Tuesday filed chargesheets against 20 persons for setting ablaze government property worth crores of rupees at Tangmarg on Srinagar-Gulmarg road during last year's summer unrest.

"We have filed chargesheet against 20 persons in the competent court of law for setting ablaze government property worth crores of rupees at Tangmarg on September 13 last year," a police spokesman said.

Five persons were killed and scores others injured in the firing by security forces after an unruly mob set ablaze almost all government offices and a missionary school in the town, 38 km from here, during a protest against alleged desecration of a holy book in the US.

The spokesman said 15 accused were produced before the court and chargesheeted along with five persons -- who passed away during the course of probe -- for rioting, possessing weapons at riot, attempt to murder, culpable homicide, etc.

A case was registered in the Tangmarg police station following the incident and during the course of investigation, police identified the accused persons who were leading the mob and orchestrated the arson, through photographs, video-clips and eyewitnesses, the spokesman said.

Last month, Jammu and Kashmir government announced construction of a mini-secretariat in the town to accommodate all its offices which were gutted in the incident.

The mini-secretariat will be constructed at a cost of Rs 34 crore.
