Srinagar: The election authorities have suspended 26 government employees for remaining absent from poll duty in Jammu and Kashmir's Budgam district during the ongoing Panchayat elections in the state.

"The District Election Officer Budgam today ordered the immediate suspension of 26 officials who were found absent from election duty during the third phase of (panchayat) polls," an official spokesman said.

He said the suspended officials include two lecturers, two headmasters and 17 school teachers.

Taking strong note of the irresponsible attitude of the teachers, District Election Officer Rafi Ahmad warned all officials drafted for polling duty for next five phases to ensure compliance of the orders.

"Action will be taken for dereliction of duty," he said.
