Jammu: A breach in the Nikki Tawi River due to incessant rains in the state has posed danger to a large portion of crops in Suchetgarh area of Jammu, an official said here on Thursday.
"The Minister for public health, engineering, irrigation and flood control, Sukhnandan Kumar visited Jassore village in Suchetgarh today where Nikki Tawi river has damaged a portion of its bank causing threat to the standing crops in the area," the official spokesperson said.
The Minister assured the residents of the area that a proposal for construction of embankment at an estimated cost of Rs 26.91 crore under Border Area Development Programme (BADP) has been formulated, he said.
In the wake of incessant rains in Jammu and Kashmir the minister today visited various areas of Suchetgarh and R S Pura and took stock of the damages caused to the Tawi banks, canals, embankments and crops due to incessant rains.
Inspecting Ranbir Canal and its tributaries, Kumar issued instructions to the engineers to start cleaning and desilting of all the canals to provide irrigation facilities to all villages.
The Minister said that government was closely monitoring the calamity in the state, adding that the administration has been geared up to take every precautionary measure to safeguard public life and property.
