Srinagar: Tension spread in the high-security Gupkar area of Srinagar after a BSF jawan guarding Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah residence opened fire on Monday morning.

As per reports, the jawan, who has not been identified yet, fired almost a dozen shots from his automatic rifle at around 7:30 am today. He was part of the BSF security detail mandated with the responsibility to provide perimeter security to the CM's residence in the upmarket Gupkar area of the city.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah was not home when the incident occurred.

Initially, the security detail of the CM took the firing as an militant attack, however, they later identified the jawan and disarmed him.

While some reports claimed that the jawan fired accidentally, others suggested that the BSF jawan was later interrogated and appeared to be mentally unstable.

The Chief Minister appeared unperturbed by the incident, Abdullah tweeted:
