Jammu and Kashmir police has registered a case against an Independent MLA of state Assembly under various sections of the Ranbir Panel Code for allegedly assaulting police officials.

Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir police has
registered a case against an Independent MLA of state Assembly
under various sections of the Ranbir Panel Code for allegedly
assaulting police officials.

The case was registered against Engineer Abdul Rasheed
in Handwara police station under Kupwara district last
evening, police said today.

Rasheed, who sat on dharna outside Handwara police
station, surrendered his security and sought international
intervention in "curbing human rights violations in the
Valley".

The legislator said he has given up security provided
by the state government to protest against "the police
brutality on him and hundreds of other youth in the Valley."

Rasheed justified the ongoing protests against the
alleged killing of youth by police and paramilitary forces in
the Valley.

"Should people watch as mute spectators the killings
of youth? I would support every pro-people programme even if
it comes from the separatists camp," the Independent MLA from
Langate Assembly constituency claimed.

Tension erupted in Handwara on Wednesday after Rasheed
was allegedly roughed up inside police station for demanding
action against the policemen who beat a driver during the
chief minister`s visit to the district.

The legislator along with hundreds of supporters had
staged protests from Wednesday evening till yesterday
demanding removal of SP (Handwara) and the SHO.
