Cold conditions tightened its grip on Jammu and Kashmir as the night temperature further fell in most parts of the state with the mercury in Srinagar settling more than three degrees below the normal.

Srinagar, the summer capital of the state, recorded a minimum temperature of minus 2.0 degrees Celsius as against the previous nights minus 1.6 degrees Celsius, a MeT Department official said here.

He said the night temperature in the city was over three degrees below the normal for this time of the season.

Leh, in Ladakh region, continues to be the coldest place in the state as the town recorded a low of minus 10.2 degrees Celsius, as compared to yesterday`s minus 10.8 degrees Celsius, the official said.

The official said Pahalgam, a health resort which serves as a base camp during annual Amarnath yatra in south Kashmir, recorded a low of minus 3.8 degrees Celsius, as compared to the previous nights minus 3.7 degrees Celsius, making it the coldest place in the Valley.

He said the famous ski-resort of Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 2.0 degrees Celsius, down from the last night?s minus 0.4 degree Celsius.

The minimum temperature in Qazigund, the gateway town to Kashmir Valley, also fell to settle at a low of minus 2.1 degrees Celsius as against the previous night?s minus 1.9 degrees Celsius, the official said.
The night temperature in south Kashmir town of Kokernag registered a low of 0.6 degree Celsius, he said, adding the tourist place had recorded a low of 1.3 degrees Celsius the previous night.

Kupwara, in north Kashmir, recorded a minimum of minus 2.5 degrees Celsius as against the previous nights minus 2.7 degrees Celsius, he said.

He said the night temperature in the nearby Kargil town settled at a low of minus 5.4 degrees Celsius as against the previous night`s minus 5.6 degrees Celsius.

The MeT Department has said the weather will remain mainly dry across Kashmir division over the next 24 hours.
