Srinagar: The beleaguered Jammu and
Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah received a shot in the
arm on Sunday with legislators of his National Conference as well
as that of the Congress rallying behind him and expressing
"full faith and confidence" in his leadership, which has come
under attack in the recent weeks during the current turmoil.

At a specially called meeting of legislators belonging
to the ruling National Conference-Congress coalition here, it
was decided that the "government will put in place an appropriate
mechanism to address the grievances and problems of the people
in a more vibrant, systematic, regular and time-bound manner
which will be viewed and reviewed from time to time by the
government."

The three-hour long meeting, the first political
initiative taken by the Chief Minister since trouble erupted
on the streets of the Valley nearly a month ago, was attended
by his father and National Conference president Farooq
Abdullah as well as Congress state chief Saif-ud-din Soz.

Most of the 80 MLAs and MLCs were present at the meeting,
including Deputy Chief Minister Tarachand and Finance Minister
Abdul Rahim Rather.

During the meeting, Omar appealed to the MLAs for
initiating a mass contact programme with people of their
respective constituencies. He said the present protests was
not a reflection on the governance of the state
administration.

The meeting expressed deep sorrow over the unfortunate
happenings in the recent past in the state and sincere anguish
and grief over the loss of life and property in these
incidents.

A threadbare review of the present situation prevailing
in the Valley was taken and some resolutions aimed at bringing
peace and order back to the disturbed areas were passed during
the meeting.

"We are deeply pained at the unfortunate happenings in
the recent past in the state and sincerely express our anguish
and grief over the loss of life and property in these
incidents. Our whole hearted sympathies are with the bereaved
families. The government has decided to provide all possible
help and relief to such aggrieved families," said a resolution
passed during the meeting expressing sympathies with the
bereaved families in the recent incidents.
