Srinagar: A Sessions court has acquitted
two policemen in the murder case of then Jammu and Kashmir
minister Mushtaq Ahmad Lone and his brother due to lack of
evidence.
"The prosecution has failed to prove the charges
against the accused," the court said in its order while
acquitting the two policemen.
The Sessions court in Kupwara district in North
Kashmir delivered the verdict last week.
Lone was shot dead by militants while he was
addressing an election rally at Tekipora in Kupwara, 100 kms
from here, on September 11, 2002.
Two of his security guards were also killed in the
militant attack.
Two months later, Lone`s brother Ghulam Mohiuddin
was also killed by the militants.
Police had arrested two policemen on charges of
hatching a criminal conspiracy with Lashkar-e-Toiba militants
to kill the minister and his brother.
Assistant sub-inspector Ghulam Rasool Wani and
selection grade constable Abdul Ahad Rather were arrested in
June 2003.
They were charged in several other cases including
a suicide attack carried out by a Pakistani militant near the
SBI Branch in Kupwara.
The duo were acquitted by the court in that case
also.
