Court wants extradition of Army officer from US in murder case

A city court has directed the authorities to expedite the process of extradition of an army officer, who is accused of murdering a human rights activist, from the United States.



Srinagar: A city court has directed the
authorities to expedite the process of extradition of an army
officer, who is accused of murdering a human rights activist,
from the United States.

"It is impressed upon the authorities concerned to
expedite the matter and make every endeavour to extradite the
accused at the earliest so that the majesty of rule in not
dented," Chief Judicial Magistrate Srinagar Yashpual Bourney
said in his order after yesterday`s hearing.

A copy of the order has also been sent to the Ministry of
External Affairs.

Major Avatar Singh is an accused in the case relating to
the murder of human rights activist and lawyer Jaleel Andrabi
in March 1996.

While Singh was untraceable for nearly 15 years, he
surfaced in the United States after his wife lodged a
complaint of domestic violence against him and told the
authorities there that he was wanted in the murder case here.

Jammu and Kashmir government took up the case with the
External Affairs Ministry to initiate the process of
extradition of the accused army officer.
