Srinagar: To give boost to the agriculture sector and provide succour to marginal farmers, Jammu and Kashmir Unit of CPI(M) today sought revival of subsidy on fertilisers.

"Since the state is primarily an agrarian economy, the government is duty bound to facilitate the farmers and orchardists in every possible way to boost the economy and protect the interests of the majority of the people associated with it both directly and indirectly," State Secretary of CPI(M) and MLA M Y Tarigami said in a statement here.

He said the cost of DAP fertilisers has shot up to Rs 1800 per quintal from Rs 1140 much to the discomfort of the farming community especially marginal farmers, who derive sustenance out of their small land holdings.

Subsidising this vital agriculture input has become pressing need of the time to save the low income agriculture class from deprivation and despair, Tarigami said.

Tarigami also asked the government to rope in agriculture universities for studying the causes behind fall in apple production this year so that timely remedial measures are taken to prevent its recurrence.

He sought strict action against manufacturers of sub standard pesticides by effective monitoring while making manure, hybrid seeds and other agriculture inputs readily available to the farmers in view of sowing season for rabi crops in the state.
