Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir unit of
CPI(M) staged a demonstration here on Tuesday demanding an
immediate rollback of fuel prices and blamed the Centre`s
policies for spiralling prices of essential commodities.
A large number of CPI(M) activists, led by the party`s
state secretary M Y Tarigami, took to the streets to protest
against the non-availability of electricity and the hike in
food and petrol prices.
"We will not pay (electricity) fees for darkness...The
government here should order a crackdown on the darkness,"
Slamming the Omar Abdullah-led government of failure, he
said it had failed even to provide basic amenities to the
people and "the people are being pushed to the wall".
About the unrest in the Valley last summer, Tarigami said
the Centre should listen to what the youth of Kashmir want to
"They are saying something, their mode of expression can
be different which we can agree or disagree with, but the
government should listen to them."
"I am afraid this might turn into a revolt," he added.
Those who martyred Mirwaiz Farooq and (Hurriyat
leader) Abdul Gani Lone and those who killed 111 children
(during last year`s summer unrest) are all murders... and
there should be an investigation into all of them, he said.
The CPI(M) leader also warned BJP to stay away from
"If BJP wants to play politics, they can play it in
New Delhi. We will not allow them to turn Kashmir into a
battlefield for them," he said.
