Srinagar: Expressing hope that peace prevails
in Jammu and Kashmir this summer, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah
said the economy of the Valley is largely dependent on tourism
and it requires peaceful atmosphere to flourish.
"The economy of the Valley is largely dependent on
handicraft skill and natural beauty and both require conducive
and peaceful atmosphere to nurture," Omar said after
inaugurating Cultural and Heritage Park at Chinar Bagh here
on Monday.
Underlining the importance of peace in the process of
development, Omar, who was accompanied by his father and union
Minister Farooq Abdullah, said the tourist season in the
Valley brings with it lot of economic hope for small traders,
houseboat owners, hoteliers, handicraft traders, petty
businessmen, sumo and auto drivers, besides others.
Omar asked the senior Abdullah to use his good offices to
revive the light and sound show at Shalimar Mughal garden on
the banks of Dal Lake, which used to be operated by the
Central Tourism Directorate.
The light and sound show was suspended indefinitely in
early 1990`s in the wake of eruption of militancy in the
state.
"This (revival of light and sound show) will provide
evening attraction to the tourists at the garden," he said.
