Srinagar: A fierce gun battle broke between security officials and separatist guerrillas in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district on late Sunday evening, police said.

According to news channel reports, the militants fired on sucurity officials who had launched a search operation in Redwani Bala village of Khudwani area of the district.

According to officials, at least three militants have holed up inside a house in the village, and security forces have marked it off to prevent them from escaping under the cover of darkness.

Acting on a tip-off about the presence of militants in Redwani Bala village of the district, a joint team of police and Army launched a search operation, police said.

Meanwhile, IANS quoted a senior police official as saying, “Security forces cordoned off Redwani Bala village in Kulgam district on Sunday evening following specific information about the presence of militants in the village."

He further said, "As the security forces tightened the cordon, holed-up militants opened fire at the surrounding security forces triggering a gunfight which is going on (as of 9.30 pm)."
