Olympics 2012: Chris Hoy becomes UK’s ‘greatest’ Olympian with sixth gold of Games

London: Cyclist Sir Chris Hoy won his sixth gold medal in the velodrome with a masterful ride in the men’s Keirin at the London Olympics on Tuesday to stamp his name as Britain’s most successful Olympian, surpassing Sir Steve Redgrave’s haul of five gold medals.

Hoy has seven medals in total, and Redgrave was present in the velodrome to congratulate him when he achieved the magnificent feat, describing Hoy’s win as ‘great’. Hoy has the same number of Olympic medals as Bradley Wiggins, but Wiggins can only boast of four of gold medals, The Telegraph reports Hoy fist pumped the air during several laps of honour after winning his favourite event, the Keirin, by holding off the rest of the field as he made a frenetic dash for the line. It sparked off enthusiastic mayhem in the velodrome, and was described by fellow cycling great Chris Boardman as “a fairy tale ending to his Olympic cycling career”. Hoy’s gold was the eight for GB’s cyclists on the track and road of London 2012. ANI
