Hardline Hurriyat calls for boycott of panchayat polls in J&K

The hardline faction of Hurriyat Conference led by Syed Ali Shah Geelani today gave a call for boycott of the upcoming panchayat and municipal elections in Jammu and Kashmir.

Srinagar: The hardline faction of Hurriyat
Conference led by Syed Ali Shah Geelani today gave a call for
boycott of the upcoming panchayat and municipal elections in
Jammu and Kashmir.

"I appeal to people to ensure complete boycott of
panchayat and municipal elections", Geelani said addressing
Majli-e-Shoora (Advisory Council) of the Hurriyat Conference
here.

The panchayat elections are slated to be held in the
state in October. Originally planned to be held in June, the
panchayat elections were postponed till October by the
government in view of the tourist season.

"At a time when people across Kashmir are up in arms and
youth with their blood have rendered Kashmir into red, policy
planners of Delhi, working on their traditionl rigid attitude,
are playing a dangerous game of holding civic elections in
Jammu and Kashmir", Geelani said.

"By preparing for civic elections, they are adding fuel
to the fire which will destroy everything," he threatened.

Geelani asked people to celebrate the forthcoming Eid and
other festivals in a simple manner as the entire state was in
mourning.

"Everyday the funeral of a teenager is on the shoulders
of people. It is not in any manner proper for us to resort to
lavish spending and indulge in un-Islamic activities," he
said.

The hardline faction also issued a fresh strike calendar
for 11 days effective from tomorrow.
