Hardline Hurriyat leader arrested

A hardline Hurriyat Conference leader, who was allegedly instrumental in managing protests last year, was arrested from the outskirts of Srinagar.

here last year, was arrested from the outskirts of Srinagar
city, police said.

Baramulla district president of Hurriyat Conference
Ghulam Hassan Mir of Dooru Sopore was arrested from Soura
locality of Srinagar city earlier this week, Superintendent of
Police Sopore Altaf Khan told reporters.

Mir, who is a graduate and has a Molvi Fazil degree from
Deoband seminary, is a fiery preacher and also addresses
Friday sermons at a Sopore mosque, he said.

Khan claimed Mir, also known as Chotta Geelani, was
arrested along with a 32-year-old woman, with whom he was
having an "immoral relationship".

"When militants killed the two sisters here on allegations
of moral turpitude, these people were claiming moral high
ground whereas they are themselves involved in immoral
relationships," Khan said.

Khan said Mir is a close associate of hardline Hurriyat
Conference leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani.

Police also produced handcuffed Mir before the media.

"He is involved in eight cases and was one of the most
wanted instigators of violence in Sopore town," Khan said.

Khan claimed Mir`s arrest will help contain the protests
in Sopore town, which has been a stronghold of stonepelting
protestors over the last three years.
