Srinagar: Moderate Hurriyat Conference led by Mirwaiz Umer Farooq on Thursday welcomed the Tripura government's decision to withdraw Armed Forces Special Powers Act from the state, and said it should serve as an "eye opener" for the Jammu and Kashmir government too.

"The Tripura government's decision to withdraw AFSPA from the state after remaining enforced for 18 years is a bold decision...," a Hurriyat spokesman said.

He said the revocation of AFSPA from Tripura should serve as an eye opener for the Jammu and Kashmir authorities which in reality have no intention to withdraw it.

"Many governments came and pledged to revoke AFSPA from the state but all these pledges and claims proved to be blatant lies made just for public consumption," the spokesman said.
