Srinagar: Prayer leader of a mosque in Qamarwari area of the city has been arrested for allegedly murdering a person on the pretext of performing a ritual after developing "illicit relation" with his wife.
The body of Shahnawaz Ahmad Dar, a resident of Chewa village of Budgam, was fished out from river Jhelum on October 3 four days after he went missing from the house of his in-laws at Qamarwari locality of the city.
"We have arrested `Imam` (prayer leader) in connection with the murder of Dar," Senior Superintendent of Police, Srinagar, Ashiq Bukhari told reporters here.
He said Mohammad Amin Naik, a resident of Kulgam district, was involved in the murder of Dar.
"Naik had pushed Dar in the Jhelum river on the pretext of performing a sacred ritual in order to solve his family problems of strained relation with his spouse," Bukhari said.
He said Dar, who was living with his in-laws at Qamarwari, went missing on September 29 shortly after going for night prayers.
Naik was put to sustained questioning and he confessed that he had "illicit relation" with the wife of the deceased and subsequently planned Dar`s murder, Bukhari said.
