Inclement weather disrupts Amarnath yatra

No fresh batch of pilgrims was on Friday allowed to proceed from here for the journey to the cave shrine of Amarnath due to inclement weather.

Jammu: No fresh batch of pilgrims was on Friday allowed to proceed from here for the journey to the cave shrine of Amarnath due to inclement weather, officials said.

The fresh batch of pilgrims from base camp of Bhagwati Nagar was not allowed to move for the onward journey as the Amarnath yatra was suspended yesterday from both Baltal and Pahalgam tracks following heavy rains, officials said.

However, 2,244 pilgrims who left in a cavalcade of 49 vehicles, which got stranded at Ramban due to landslides at Panthal on Jammu-Srinagar highway, had been permitted to move for the onward journey last night.

These pilgrims had reached their respective destinations at Baltal and Nunwan camps in Pahalgam early this morning, officials said.

Meanwhile, pilgrims at both Baltal and Pahalgam have not been allowed to trek onwards to 3,880-metre high cave shrine as tracks have been rendered unsafe due to heavy rains.
