Jammu: Five Indian Reserve Police (IRP) Battalions have been raised in Jammu and Kashmir, the state government informed the Legislative Assembly on Monday.

Replying to a question of Congress member Gulam Ahmed Mir during Question Hour, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said in a written reply: "Five new IRP battalions have been raised in the police department in terms of the Government Order-2009 in Jammu and Kashmir".

Abdullah further said 11,192 police posts of different categories were created in Jammu and Kashmir in last two years.

With liberal financial assistance from the Government of India, state police has been armed with sophisticated weapons and provided with adequate transport facilities, he said.

IT has been introduced in a big way in the police department and their communication network has been enhanced, which has also improved their efficiency, he said.

Abdullah said that police hospitals at Jammu and Srinagar have been upgraded and fitted with better medical equipment.
