Jammu: After remaining closed for five consecutive days, the strategic Jammu-Srinagar highway was thrown open for one-way traffic on Saturday .

"One-way traffic has been restored on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway today (Saturday)."

"Traffic will move from Jammu to Srinagar. No vehicle will be allowed to move on the highway in the opposite direction," a senior traffic police officer told IANS here.

More than 4,000 people were stranded in Jammu for the last five days due to the closure of the highway.

The 300km long road was closed due to landslides triggered by heavy downpour in the Ramban district of Jammu region on Monday.

The highway is the lifeline of the landlocked Kashmir Valley as all supplies of the essentials of life are routed through the road.

The air ticket rates from Jammu to Srinagar touched an unprecedented high because of the highway closure.

Air tickets from Jammu to Srinagar which normally range between Rs.2,000-3,000 per passenger shot up to Rs.20,000 on Friday.
