J&K lawyers strike intensifies; DGP assures fair probe

High Court lawyers` on Sunday intensified their indefinite strike demanding suspension of police officials over the assault of their colleague in J&K.

Jammu: High Court lawyers` on Sunday intensified their indefinite strike demanding suspension of police officials over the assault of their colleague, even as Jammu and Kashmir DGP assured a fair probe into the matter.

DGP Ashok Prasad said that action would be taken against erring policeman. "No one is above the law. If someone has broken the law, has to go through a legal process," he asserted. The lawyers have gone on an indefinite strike paralysing working of the judiciary for three days in protest against assault of their colleague by police here. They observed strike and held demonstrations at the High Court complex in Janipur area against police and demanded suspension of the erring police officials including the station house officer (SHO) and an impartial inquiry into it. "It is not that anybody can be excused whether he is a police officer or anybody else. It does not matter. We have conducted our preliminary inquiry. If anybody wants to have another inquiry they are welcome to have it. If there is no fault on either side, that person (policeman) should not be victimised," the DGP told reporters here. Meanwhile, Jammu Bar Association President M K Bhardwaj told reporters that they will continue their indefinite strike in protest against the incident and demand suspension of the erring policemen.
