Responding to the problem of traffic hazards, state government has engaged RITES limited for preparation of Comprehensive Mobility Plans (CMPs) for Srinagar and Jammu capital cities in the state, Minister for Transport Qamar Ali Akhoon said while replying to a call attention motion of professor Chaman Lal Gupta in the Legislative Assembly on Friday.

The CMPs will serve as a necessary basis for eventually
formulating detailed project reports for any possible mass
transport system in two capital cities including introduction
of metro rail, he said.

The draft reports in this regard are expected to be
submitted by RITES in April 2012, the minister said.

The minister also said there has been spurt in number of vehicles plying in Jammu district during past couple of years without corresponding increase in the road
infrastructure.

As ending December 2011, 405726 vehicles are registered
cumulatively in the district as against 373121 vehicles
registered ending March 2009, he said.

The increase in the vehicle population is primarily due
to the improvement in general economic conditions and
purchasing power of the people, heavy influx of tourists and
movements of Army and Para military forces, he said.
