J&K govt orders probe into infant deaths

The probe was ordered by Medical Education Minister RS Chib during a visit to GB Panth hospital where 35 new born babies died in the last fortnight.

Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir government on Wednesday ordered a probe into the death of a large number of infants in a child hospital here.

The probe was ordered by Medical Education Minister RS Chib during a visit to the GB Panth hospital where 35 new born babies died in the last fortnight.

"We are examining the reasons and trying to find out corrective measures so that precious lives can be saved. The figure of 35 (deaths) is correct," Chib said.

The Minister said if ventilators are in shortage at the hospital, more will be procured and the nursing staff will be increased.

Chib said a team of specialists from the medical college will probe whether there has been any negligence on behalf of the officials of the hospital which led to the deaths.
