Srinagar: The chairman of Jammu and
Kashmir Muslim League Mustaq Ul Islam was on Thursday arrested from
his residence in Batamaloo locality here, leading to brief
protests in the area.
"He has been arrested as there are some previous cases
against him," SSP Ashiq Bukhari said here.

Mushtaq-ul-Islam is a former militant commander of
Hizbullah and spent 14 years in jail after he was arrested in
1991.

A police officer said his arrest is linked to stone
pelting and there is a pending dossier against him.
Soon after his arrest, a group of youths started
pelting stones at passing vehicles and police personnel in his
native locality of Dyarwani in Batamaloo area.

However, additional personnel were rushed to the area
and the miscreants were chased away, police said, adding, no
one was hurt in the brief clashes.
