Jammu: Jammu and Kashmir Police is setting up `mobile` bulletproof bunkers to arm themselves with safety measures to take on militants more effectively during counter-terror operations.
"Police is setting up vehicle-mounted bulletproof bunkers for their use during counter-terror operations and encounters in the state," a senior police official said.
The J&K police recently floated tenders for fabrication of 30 such bunkers on vehicles.
As per the tender, floated by the IGP (Police Headquarters), there should be several cabins for the bullet proof bunkers, particularly for driver on a platform of TATA LPT 709 (3400 wheel base) supplied by TATA Motors.
Giving further details, it said that the bunker should withstand the fire of self-loading rifle (SLR)- 7.62 mm and AK-type rifle from a distance of 10 meters from all the four sides and top, including the window panes and ports.
Not only this, it should also have bullet-resistant and bullet-proof glass of thickness 50 mm.
"The fuel tank should also be bullet proofed in order to avoid targeting by militants during encounter," it said.
The measures have been taken to minimise casualties of police force, who is slowly taking up major responsibilities on anti-terror operations, the official said.
