J&K: Sopore SP transferred

SP of J&K`s Sopore district, Altaf Khan, was shifted in the wake of the death of a youth allegedly in police custody.

Srinagar: The Superintendent of Police of
Jammu and Kashmir`s Sopore district, Altaf Khan, was on Tuesday
shifted in the wake of the death of a youth allegedly in
police custody in the north Kashmir town on Sunday.

"In order to ensure fair and impartial investigation
into the incident, it was decided to transfer SP, Sopore, with
immediate effect," an official spokesman said after a meeting
chaired by Minister of State for Home Nasir Aslam Wani to
review the progress of the ongoing probe into the alleged
custodial death of Nazim Rashid Shalla alias Anjum at Sopore.

Khan was replaced by SP, Ganderbal, Imtiyaz Hussain with
immediate effect, an official spokesman said.

"During the meeting, it was decided that DIG, North
Kashmir Range, Muneer Ahmad Khan, will be the overall
in-charge of the ongoing investigation," the spokesman said.

He said the meeting, which was attended by Director
General of Police Kuldeep Khoda and Principal Secretary, Home,
BR Sharma, also reviewed the progress of the magisterial
inquiry being conducted by SDM Sopore Muhammad Ahsan Mir.

Earlier in the day, a delegation of opposition PDP
leaders was given a hostile reception by the local residents
on their arrival at Rashid`s residence.

Local residents indulged in slogan-shouting and pelted
stones at their vehicles.

"Three to four vehicles were damaged before the PDP
leaders decided to return," official sources said.
A PDP spokesman said the agitators were demanding
removal of both DySP and the SP.
