Jammu: Liquor intake in Kashmir has nearly
doubled in the last one year with 16,78,208 bottles of Indian
made foreign liquor (IMFL), beer and desi liquor being
consumed in the valley in 2009-10.
A revenue of Rs 19.39 crores was earned by the government
in 2009-10 in this regard as compared to Rs 13.59 crores in
2008-09, Finance Abdul Rahim Rather said.
In 2008-2009, 9,29,677 bottles of liquor were consumed
with the intake of beer rising to 8,03,924 bottles in 2009-10,
the minister said in a written reply in the Legislative
Assembly.
As much as 3,35,133 bottles of beer were consumed during
2008-09 in Srinagar district alone.
IMFL (Indian made foreign liquor) consumption has
increased from 5,70,686 bottles in 2008-09 to 8,10,083 bottles
in 2009-10 in the state, he said.
Desi liquor consumption increased to 8,625 bottles in
2009-10 as against 1,707 bottles in the previous year.
It may be recalled that militants had banned consumption
of liquor in Kashmir valley during emergence of militancy in
1989-90.
