Srinagar: A man was today held for allegedly attempting to rape a minor girl after protests broke out demanding his arrest in south Kashmir`s Kulgam district.
Tariq Ahmad Dar, a resident of Bugam village in Kulgam, was arrested this morning after locals complained that he had tried to molest a minor girl in his neighbourhood yesterday, Kulgam Superintendent of Police Mohammad Shafi Mir said.
The incident led to minor protests in the village with locals demanding Dar`s arrest.
"Locals complained about the incident to the police yesterday. A police team was deputed to the hospital where the girl had been admitted for medical check-up.
"Based on her complaint, the team raided the house of Dar, who by then had fled from the spot," Mir said.
Police detained Dar`s brother for questioning, but later set him free, he said.
"This morning we arrested Dar and are now waiting for the medical report," Mir said.
