Srinagar: An unidentified militant and a head constable of Jammu and Kashmir police were on Saturday killed in an encounter in Keller area of Shopian district of the Kashmir Valley.

Following a tip-off about the presence of ultras in the house of Khadim Shah, security forces launched a search operation in Donadu village of Keller area, 55 kms from here, in Shopian district this morning, officials said.

As the security forces were planning to break into the house, the militants dragged in head constable Gulab Singh.

The security forces asked the militants to surrender and release the cop but the ultras refused the offer, they said.

The militants killed the policeman after which a fierce gunbattle began between the two sides, they said.

One militant has been killed so far, the officials said, adding the operation was still in progress.
