Omar stresses on preservation of environment

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has emphasised on preservation of environment while making efforts to promote economic activities through tourism in the state.

Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has emphasised on preservation of environment while making efforts to promote economic activities through tourism in the state.

"While tourism potential of the State should be utilised to generate wide ranging economic activities, the importance of preserving environment and natural grandeur must not lose the focus at any cost," Omar said at the 4th meeting of
Sonamarg Development Authority here yesterday.

The Chief Minister advised the development authority
to concentrate on promoting adventure and sports tourism,
including water rafting, mountain biking,trekking and
paragliding in Sonamarg.

He also underlined the importance of eco-friendly
tourism for preserving the State`s natural wealth and
maintaining eco-balance.

The meeting was attended by the Minister for Forests
and Environment Mian Altaf Ahmad, Minister for Tourism Nawang
Rigzin Jora, Minister of State for Tourism Nasir Aslam Wani
and senior officials of the concerned departments.

The Chief Minister approved Rs 80 lakh for the
completion of a youth hostel, Sonamarg Club, Yatri Niwas and
Tourist Reception Centre.

He directed the executing agencies to complete the
construction of these buildings by mid-July this year.

Omar also approved Rs 68 lakh for tarring roads and other
works at truck terminals besides giving nod to a Rs 1.29 crore
project for uninterrupted power supply to Sonamarg.
