One cop killed, three injured in Sopore encounter

A policeman was killed and three others injured in a fierce encounter between security forces and terrorists at Chankhan area of Sopore town in Jammu and Kashmir`s Baramulla district.

Srinagar: A policeman was killed and three others injured in a fierce encounter between security forces and terrorists at Chankhan area of Sopore town in Jammu and Kashmir`s Baramulla district.

Police officials said the encounter started after a search team visited the area to look for terrorists militants after getting a tip-off. There was information that two to three terrorists could be hiding in a house.
As the police officials arrived at the house, terrorists lobbed a grenade injuring four policemen.

Injured police personnel were shifted to a Srinagar hospital, where an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) succumbed to his injuries.
"An ASI today succumbed to injuries in the hospital. Other three injured policemen are being treated in hospital. The operation against the militants is still on," the senior police officer said.

Firing has reportedly stopped in the area which has been cordoned off by the security forces including the Special Operations Group (SOG) of the police, soldiers of counter insurgency Rashtriya Rifles and troopers of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).
