Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir Police on Saturday detained JKLF chairman Yaseen Malik and social activist Swami Agnivesh when they tried to lead a march towards Narbal in central Kashmir's Budgam district where a youth was killed in firing by security forces during a protest earlier today.

Police took the two into preventive custody at Maisuma as they attempted to take out a march towards Narbal, where Suhail Ahmad Sofi was killed and two others were injured when security forces opened fire in Narbal village at demonstrators who were protesting against the killing of two youths in an Army operation in Tral area of south Kashmir earlier this week.

Agnivesh had joined Malik this morning in the 30-hour hunger strike against the proposal to create separate settlements for Kashmiri migrant Pandits.

The detentions came as fresh clashes were reported between police and protesters in Srinagar. Clashes had rocked the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir on Friday as well following the arrest of separatist leader Masarat Alam.

Reports said protesters in Srinagar today pelted stones at police.

The clashes started hours after the youth's death in Narbal in CRPF firing.

Reports said that the CRPF personnel initially used tear gas to disperse the protesters in Narbal, but as the crowd turned violent and started pelting stones, they resorted to firing.

Three youth who were injured in the firing were rushed to a hospital here, where one of them, identified as Suhail Ahmad Sofi, succumbed to injuries.

The J&K Police, meanwhile, said that a preliminary inquiry into the incident indicated that the forces allegedly acted in violation of the laid down Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

A spokesman said a case under various sections of the RPC, including 302 (murder), has been registered in Police Station Magam.

The state government has also ordered a magisterial probe into the killing of the youth in Narbal.

Meanwhile, authorities today placed several separatists, including moderate Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, under house arrest.

Mirwaiz was placed under house arrest this morning in view of fresh protests in some parts of the Valley over killing of the two youths in Tral.

Hardline Hurriyat Conference chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani and several other second-rung separatist leaders continued to be under house arrest for the second consecutive day today.

Geelani has called for shutdown in the state today to protest against Masarat Alam's arrest as well as the killing of two youths in Tral.

Alam, 45, hardliner was arrested from his home in Habbakadal area of the city on Friday morning, apparently after the Centre pushed for it.

Police late on Friday added Section 121A (waging war against the country) and Section 124 (sedition) to FIR lodged against Alam.

A court on Friday night remanded Alam, arrested over raising of pro-Pakistan slogans and hoisting Pakistan flags at a rally in Srinagar earlier this week, to seven-day police custody by a court in Budgam.
