Panchayat poll in J-K in Sept-Oct: Omar

The panchayat polls in Jammu and Kashmir would be held later this year to transfer power to the people at grass roots, chief minister Omar Abdullah said today.



Srinagar: The panchayat polls in Jammu and
Kashmir would be held later this year to transfer power to the
people at grass roots, chief minister Omar Abdullah said
today.

"Panchayat elections would be conducted during
September-october this year to transfer power to the people at
grass roots", Omar said addressing a grand garm sabha
convention here.

The panchayat polls were due in 2006 but could not be
held for various reasons all these years. The last time such
polls were held in the state after 20 years in 2001.

The Chief Minister`s announcement of panchayat polls were
greeted by the people.

Omar castigated opposition PDP for shifting its
"ommissions and commissions" on Indus Water Treaty (IWT)
signed by India with pakistan in 1960`s on his national
conference.

"When the treaty was signed in 1960 with Pakistan former
chief minister Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah was in prison and the
perpetrators were those (PDP leadership) who are now making
the noise and pretending to represent public sentiments", Omar
said.
