Jammu: Police opened fire in the air as a mob
protesting the death of a driver, torched two vehicles and
attacked a police station in Doda district of Jammu and
Kashmir today.
Acting on a complaint of a parent whose teenager daughter
went missing in Thathri belt of Doda district, police picked
up a driver Rafiq Ahmed for questioning at police station
Thathri this afternoon, police officials said.
However, the driver, who was beaten up, escaped from the
police station and was chased by police constables, they said
adding he jumped into river Chenab from a bridge.
As the news spread, over 300-400 people raising
anti-police slogans attacked the police station and set afire
two vehicles, including the vehicle of Station House Officer
(SHO) Ravinder Kumar.
Later reinforcement was sent and police resorted to
cane charge to disperse the attackers, they said adding police
later fired in the air as attackers ransacked the police
station and beat up cops.
In the clashes, five persons, including a cop, were
injured, they said. The protestors were demanding suspension of cops involved
in the incident and shifting of SHO, police said adding later
a meeting took place between senior citizens and senior police
officials and the matter was resolved.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Jammu Zone Ashok Gupta
told PTI that SHO has been shifted and the situation has been
brought under control.
