Srinagar: At least one person was dead and another injured on Monday when security forces fired at protesters demanding the remains of Parliament attack accused Afzal Guru in Jammu and Kashmir's Baramulla district.
The protest was carried out during the second anniversary of Afzal Guru's hanging in Palhalan area of north Kashmir Baramulla district.
Officials said the youths pelted stones at the police and CRPF personnel, who fired tear smoke shells to disperse them but in vain.
The security forces then fired some rounds at the protesters resulting in death of Farooq Ahmad Bhat and injuries to Reyaz Ahmad Dar, who has been shifted to a hospital here for treatment, they said, as per PTI.
"Restrictions under Section 144 CrPC have been imposed in these areas for maintaining law and order," Deputy Commissioner Srinagar Farooq Ahmad Lone told PTI.
Senior civil administration and police officials have rushed to the area, 30 kms from here, where protests were going on.
Guru was hanged by the then Congress-led government on February 9, 2013 inside Tihar Jail in Delhi.
Several separatists leaders were detained or put under house arrest and prohibitory orders clamped in the city in the wake of protests called by them today.
Curfew-like restrictions were imposed in Safakadal, Maharaj Gunj, Khanyar, Rainawari and Nowhatta police station areas in the old city and Maisuma police station area in the commercial hub of Lal Chowk.
