Srinagar: The security forces on Friday shot dead two Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militants in a fierce gun battle in Jammu and Kashmir`s Pulwama district.
Confirming the development, DGP Kuldeep Khoda said, “Two LeT terrorists were killed in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir this morning.”
“The encounter lasted four hours, “he added.
The terrorists, identified as Altaf and Zahoor, were involved in a car bomb blast and killing of two policemen in Pampore last year, he said.
Two AK rifles were recovered from the militants, SP Avantipura Basheer Khan said.
Acting on specific information, police and army launched a combing operation this morning in village Andrusa.
As the security forces zeroed in, the militants, whose number could not be ascertained, opened fire at them prompting the security forces to retaliate.
The security forces initially succeeded in eliminating the first terrorist and intensified efforts to kill the remaining militant.
A CRPF officer revealing more details about the operation said, “The hold-up militants were asked to surrender but they opened fire at the troops triggering a gun battle."
This gun battle comes a day after a 22-hour-long gunfight between guerrillas and security forces in city centre Lal Chowk in Srinagar. Four people were killed and 10 injured in the earlier incident.
