Jaipur: No day off, excessive paper work and political pressure are the key stressors among Jaipur police personnel, says a study to be presented at an international conference next year.
The study, carried out by NMP medical Research institute to explore job stresses and health complaints among cops, is claimed to be the first of its kind study on Jaipur police which covers personnel of two major disciplines- police stations and traffic police.
According to the report more than 80 percent of the policemen blame lack of day offs, no social life, excessive paper work and political pressure to be the major factors contributing to the excessive stress at work resulting in the poor general health of the cops.
Out of the total 412 operational staff covered in the study, 76 percent said that the lack of support from their seniors and the department caused stress for them while 62 percent policemen blamed the public discontent to be a cause.
"The results indicate that the Jaipur police have high levels of gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal and undiagnosed health complaints mainly associated to higher stress," said Neha Sharma, one of the experts who conducted the study.
Other factors that are largely blamed for contributing to the work pressure are irrelevant policies and procedures, criticisms by media and public, long working hours and recalling policemen when they are off duty, the report added.
The study also showed that policemen deployed at the police stations across the city showed higher levels of job stress as compared to the traffic constables and are prone to frequent health complaints and severe depression.
The report also says that the policemen deployed in the police stations are more prone to suicides, though no such cases were reported in the recent past.
The report has been accepted and will be presented in the 3rd International Conference for Health, Wellness and Society, scheduled to be held in Brazil on March next year, she added.
Punit Sharma, the co-author of the report, said the survey was initially conducted six years back and was repeated this year however there was no statistical difference and the report is now ready to be shared with people of scientific community.
