The Supreme Court has stayed the Jharkhand High Court order rejecting an income tax department plea to relieve its Director Investigation Ujjawal Chaudhary from probing the Madhu Koda scam case.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has stayed
the Jharkhand High Court order rejecting an income tax
department plea to relieve its Director Investigation Ujjawal
Chaudhary from probing the Madhu Koda scam case.

A Bench comprising justices Dalveer Bhandari and
Deepak Verma in an interim order stayed the High Court
decision for four weeks.
The income-tax department had filed an application in
the high court to relieve Chaudhary saying that the services
of the senior officer was required for the Bihar Assembly
election.

However, it had refused its plea following which the
IT department approached the Supreme Court.

The high court had said that Chaudhary will stay on as
investigator in the Koda scam and had asked the income tax
department to find another person to do duty in the coming
Bihar assembly elections.

The department in February had ordered the transfer of
19 officers. Chaudhary`s transfer was stayed on the PIL filed
by a social activist Durga Oraon.
The department under his aegis had raided 69 places in
eight cities in India in October last year and 67 places in
February.

The raids were conducted under Chaudhary`s supervision
at houses of former chief minister Madhu Koda and others. The
raids unearthed a Rs 2,500-crore money laundering scam.
