Srinagar: A massive search operation on friday was launched in Kupwara district of north Kashmir after militants exchanged fire with a patrol party.

A joint patrol party of police and Rashtriya Rifles came under fire from a group of heavily-armed militants in Sogam forest late Thursday night, official sources said.

They said security forces, who had moved to the forest area on getting information about the presence of militants, retaliated and the exchange of fire continued for nearly half-an-hour.

There was no immediate report of any casualty on either side during the gunbattle, the sources said adding the ultras fled the scene taking advantage of darkness.

Reinforcements have been rushed to the area on friday morning and a massive search operation was on to flush out the militants, the sources said.
