New Delhi: Congress on Thursday steered clear of the issue of sedition charge against some Kashmiri students studying in Meerut for cheering Pakistan's victory against India during a recent cricket match, an action that sparked an outrage in Kashmir.

"I am not aware of sedition charges. I am not aware of what level the decision is taken. I will get back to you once I brief myself more on this," party spokesperson Shashi Tharoor told reporters.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, whose party National Conference is a coalition partner in UPA, has slammed the slapping of sedition charge by Uttar Pradesh Police against the around 60 students as uncalled for and an "unacceptably harsh punishment" and said it will ruin the future of the students and further alienate them. He asked the UP government to reverse the decision.

Omar, who took up the matter with his UP counterpart Akhilesh Yadav, however, said that what the students did was wrong and misguided.
