Srinagar: Separatists-sponsored general strike to protest against landing of Indian troops in Jammu and Kashmir on this day crippled life in the Valley on Tuesday.

Shops and business establishments, educational institutions, banks, courts, and other semi-government institutions remained closed and traffic off the roads in the
Valley in response to the call given by both factions of Hurriyat Conference.

The strike was also supported among others by Kashmir High Court Bar Association, officials said.
It was on this day in 1947 that Indian troops had landed in the state to repulse Pakistani-backed tribal attackers who had reached Srinagar airport.

Police and paramilitary forces have been deployed in sensitive areas in strength to maintain law and order.
Reports from district headquarters said near-total shutdown was observed in Kupwara, Baramulla, Bandipora, Budgam, Ganderbal, Pulwama, Anantnag, Shopian and Kulgam.
